Each September, millions of people worldwide pledge to cut down their landfill waste for a week, all while saving money, conserving resources, and enjoying the process. This initiative, launched by Rachelle Strauss in 2008, encourages us to rethink what we throw away and view waste as an opportunity to recycle and repurpose resources. As we celebrate Zero Waste Week this September, we are reminded that every small action can lead to a big impact. The Islamic Community Center of Potomac (ICCP) Green Team exemplifies this commitment, particularly through the creative efforts of seventh grader Sufyana Johnson. Her Ramadan Recycling Patrol game has turned recycling and composting into a fun and engaging challenge, helping the community reduce, reuse, and recycle with confidence.

Click here to play Ramadan Recycling Patrol and see how you do! With over 20,000 pounds of organic material diverted from local landfills, ICCP’s dedication to environmental stewardship is truly inspiring. Sufyana’s game has educated and energized the community, making recycling and composting second nature during Ramadan and beyond.

Reflecting on the importance of these efforts, let us seize this moment to deepen our commitment to zero waste.  Join us in making meaningful changes that lead to significant results. Let us inspire one another to embrace zero waste and champion environmental stewardship, reflecting our shared values of respect for creation found in major faith traditions and indigenous spiritualities.

Next, dive into our newly released "Reducing Your Trash" Action Kit for practical tips on reducing waste in your daily life, step-by-step guides on moving towards Zero Waste, and pledges to share with your congregation.  Simple changes like carrying a reusable water bottle, reducing single-use plastics, or composting food scraps can significantly reduce your environmental footprint. These small steps align with our broader moral call to care for the Earth.
