Hess Stinson is a naturalist, ethnographer, and heritage researcher whose work bridges environmental stewardship and cultural memory in the Chesapeake region. Their ethnographic work documents how Chesapeake communities have used spiritual practice and land-based knowledge to care for the environment, preserve memory, and sustain cultural resilience across generations. Hess’ research focused on African American folk traditions and religious, futuristic, and memory studies. They also have hands-on land and water stewardship experience. In addition to a MFA from Wilkes University, Hess is a Maryland Master Naturalist (University of Maryland Extension), Master Watershed Steward (Penn State Extension), DelMarVa Master Woodlands Steward (University of Maryland Extension), and a graduate of the LEAD the Shore environmental leadership training. Hess is excited to partner with faith communities, institutions, and descendant groups to advance ecologically and culturally informed stewardship of the region.
