Nestled in a wooded corner of Prince George’s County, Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Congregation is a vibrant, multicultural, and progressive faith community rooted in justice, compassion, and care for the Earth. Their beautiful property, tucked into a suburban landscape just outside the city, reflects what they believe: that we are called not only to gather in community, but to live in right relationship with the land that sustains us.
Their environmental stewardship journey is a powerful example of how transformation can begin with a single voice.
Several years ago, Davies Memorial first participated in our Faithful Green Leaders Training as what we affectionately call a “Lone Green Sheep” which is one dedicated individual passionate about creation care, eager to learn, and hopeful about inspiring others. That seed of commitment did not remain solitary for long.
Last year, Davies Memorial returned to the training as a full team, demonstrating how stewardship grows when nurtured by community. Their commitment and collaboration have now earned them Full Green Team status, marking a meaningful milestone in their journey.
Since then, their impact has continued to flourish.
Members of the congregation have organized tree plantings to strengthen the local canopy and support climate resilience. They recently installed a native plant garden, intentionally selecting species that support pollinators, improve soil health, and restore habitat. These projects are more than landscaping improvements, they are tangible expressions of Unitarian Universalist values that affirm the interconnectedness of all life.
At Davies Memorial, environmental stewardship is not separate from faith; it is an extension of it. Unitarian Universalism calls its members to respect the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part. That theological grounding is visible in how this congregation approaches its land — not as property to manage, but as a living system to protect and restore.

Their work continues to deepen through partnership. Davies Memorial is currently participating in our Capacity-Building Community Based Initiative in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Together, we are addressing significant stormwater runoff challenges that have caused erosion and impacted their parking lot and surrounding areas. By exploring nature-based solutions and long-term mitigation strategies, the congregation is taking thoughtful, proactive steps toward flood resilience and watershed health.
What stands out most about Davies Memorial is not just the projects completed, but the spirit behind them. Their green team reflects the diversity and energy of their congregation, individuals bringing different perspectives, cultures, and experiences together around a shared commitment to care for creation. Their wooded campus serves as both sanctuary and classroom, inviting members and neighbors alike to witness what faith in action looks like on the land.
From one “Lone Green Sheep” to a thriving Full Green Team, Davies Memorial’s journey is a reminder that sustainable change often begins with one voice, and grows through community, courage, and collaboration.
We are honored to walk alongside Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Congregation as they continue to steward their grounds, strengthen resilience, and live out their values in ways that benefit both their congregation and the wider Prince George’s County community.
