Rev. Forrest Gilmore, the minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, eloquently reminds congregation members that their denomination's Seventh Principle: respect for the interdependent web of all existence, extends beyond mere environmentalism. This principle is deeply rooted in both theological and philosophical traditions, reflecting a belief in the sacredness of all life and the interconnectedness of all beings. It serves as their response to the perils of individualism and oppression, bridging the apparent divide between self and community.
This principle, central to Unitarian Universalist identity, offers a path to embracing something greater than ourselves. Whether expressed as the spirit of life, the oneness of existence, or the creative force, the interdependent web fosters a social understanding sorely needed in our culture.
At the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, this principle is not just a concept but a lived reality. Through earth-centered spirituality and a commitment to caretaking the environment, their members embody their principles in tangible ways. This congregation solidified its commitment by signing IPC's Partner Congregation Pledge in June 2023. Since then, their congregation has started on its Creation Care journey by starting a green team.
Building on this foundation, the newly formed Green Team has been doing great work to care for Creation, particularly focusing on pollinators. Their efforts to organize programs and festivals dedicated to pollinator conservation has attracted members of all ages. From planting native plants with the preschoolers to hosting milk jug seed workshops, they demonstrate a holistic approach to environmental stewardship.
In doing so, they not only enrich their congregation but also extend their care to the wider community and beyond. The Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring stands as a shining example of living out their principles with purpose and impact.
Learn more about the work that this green team is doing by watching the recording of our spring themed learning lab Spring is in The Air! where they spoke on their efforts.
In this learning lab you’ll learn about how you can turn your garden into a pollinator paradise and make it a sanctuary for one of summer’s special friends, fireflies. Not only are fireflies’ important pollinators they are also beneficial insects that help control other harmful insect populations by eating garden pests like slugs, snails, and grubs. Make sure to turn off your lights at night so fireflies can find each other!
All our webinars are supplementary to IPC’s Faithful Green Leaders Training Program and open to the public. To see a library of our past recordings click this link and share with others!
